Join us for Wooster Community Band Concert, June 19 at 7 p.m.

Wayne County Historical Society is pleased to announce the Wooster Community Band is looking forward to its first concert of the summer! This Community Band is sponsored by the Wayne County Historical Society, thanks to an anonymous donor.

The band will be performing under the baton of Mr. Randy Claes on June 19, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. on the front lawn of the Wayne County Historical Society campus. Spectators will want to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. If the weather that evening will not permit an outdoor concert, it will be moved to St. Mary’s Gymnasium (across the street from the Wayne County Historical Society).

A second concert is planned for July 24, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in downtown Wooster in the parking lot in front of Everything Rubbermaid.

The band will be playing fun songs, including marches, show tunes, and patriotic songs. This band is an effort to remind us of the bands which many communities had a century or so ago. As an example, many years ago, the Wooster Board of Trade Band conducted concerts in the old bandstand in front of what is now Everything Rubbermaid.

We greatly appreciate the wonderful cooperation of The College of Wooster, Professor Nancy Ditmer, College of Wooster director Tom Roblee, Main Street Wooster, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and coordinator Gerald Payn. Also many thanks to our dear friend and donor who has graciously sponsored the Wooster Community Band for the past three years.

According to Mr. Payn, “The Wooster Community Band is open to anyone who plays a band instrument — including percussion — young or not so young, experienced or not so experienced! We’re pleased to have about fifty members in the band this year!”

I am a 2009 graduate from loudonville. I have been playing flute since 5th grade but was not able to play during college due to working. I have been wanting to get back at it somehow and someone mentioned this band. I was wondering how this works or if I would be able to participate at all. If anyone would be able to give me more information I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much

    • The band is open to anybody that plays an instrument and has between 50 and 60 members. The group is under the direction of Randy Claes and The College of Wooster music department provides rehearsal space for the band. You can contact Gerald Payn at 330-345-5547 or to find out more about when practice will be scheduled for 2015.
