Did you know that the Wayne County Historical Society has never had a formal logo designed and adopted by the society?

The current logo we are all familiar with is actually based on the the Bowman street road sign out front of the Beall-Stibbs house. Looking back through the years, different attempts at an official logo have all centered around either 1) the current letterhead at the time or 2) the current front road sign. While trying to brainstorm some exciting, new public relations and marketing ideas for the society over a year ago, the PR/Marketing committee kept coming back to the issue of branding and our logo. We have no true identity. Sure, when people hear our name they know who we are, but we were missing an image, slogan, and color scheme to truly set us apart; not only from other organizations in the community, but from the other 14 Wayne Counties throughout the nation.

Originally, we went about this process by contacting local companies who do this type of work. After a few conversations and sample designs from several businesses, we decided we had the capability, vision, and resources to do it within our own WCHS committee made up of Dick Lewellen, Molly Pierson, Julie Pooler (chair), Vicki Slater, and Susan Zimmerman. With committee input, Dicks design skills combined with Susans computer expertise, our committee came up with over 60 logo design options! We have narrowed these options down to the 9 designs displayed below.

As you see, we are proposing a more bold and direct logo which could be utilized across all of the historical society’s media applications, from print media, like brochures and letterheads, to large and small signs, to digital applications like our website and social media accounts.
You will notice a Schoolhouse theme in many of these designs. Both our mission statement, and IRS tax forms, note a strong identity as an educational facility offering “historical education” and “educational programs”, and the committee believes the logo should reflect this mission. Our committee also chose to use our full legal name in the logo designs, Wayne County Historical Society of Ohio, as another way to differentiate ourselves from the other Wayne County Historical Society’s located across the country and in the global online marketplace.

The Board, and members of the PR/Marketing Committee, value the input of our members. This is where YOU come in. We would like to know what you, your friends, and your family think of these designs. Positive or negative thoughts we want to hear from you! Please contact the office at (330) 264-8856 or the newsletter editor at editor@waynehistoricalohio.org and let us know what you think! The deadline for input is Friday, February 13th. We look forward to hearing from you and embarking on this exciting journey as we put a new face to the WCHS in our community.
