President’s Day was first established as a Federal holiday in 1879 to honor George Washington who was born on 22 February 1732. He served as the first U.S. President from 1789 to 1797. Currently, it is celebrated to honor all those who have served as presidents of the United States. In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved President’s Day to the third Monday in February.

On February 17, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. , in celebration of President’s Day, Abigail Adams will be visiting the Schoolhouse at the Wayne County Historical Society. There is no charge for the program and it is open to the public.

Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, one of the leaders in the American Revolution and the second president of the United States. She was outspoken in her opinions on the issues of her day and often corresponded with her husband through letters. One of the most popular quotes from Abigail Adams can be found in a letter she wrote to her husband, John, on March 31, 1776.

“I long to hear that you have declared an independency – and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands…If perticular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.”
