The Wayne County Historical Society has received a $5,000 OH CARES grant from Ohio Humanities to help mitigate the impact of the coronavirus-driven closure of the historical society’s campus. The grant was made possible by funding that Ohio Humanities received from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the March 2020 CARES Act.
One portion of the grant is being used to purchase video and audio equipment, which will allow the historical society to expand its production and distribution of digital content, developing a virtual historical society alongside the bricks-and-mortar one. The rest of the grant will help defray some of the organization’s utilities costs, during a time when income from events, tours, and individual and corporate donations is projected to be reduced by approximately 40 percent due to the pandemic.
The Wayne County Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Wayne County. Founded in 1904, today the Historical Society operates a campus with eight buildings, including a pioneer-era log house, a mid-19th century general store, and the Beall-Stibbs homestead, begun in 1816 and completed in the early 1820s by War of 1812 veteran General Reasin Beall.
