The Wayne County Civil War Roundtable will offer a free program on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wooster branch of the Wayne County Public Library. Lincoln presenter Gerald (Jerry) Payn will present a PowerPoint program on the eventful second half of 1863, including the three-day battle of Gettysburg, the surrender of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, and the November dedication of a new Soldiers National Cemetery, at which President Lincoln was asked to give “a few appropriate remarks” and delivered the most compelling 262 words in the history of American oratory: the Gettysburg Address.

Payn has presented programs as President Lincoln for more than 20 years, sometimes logging as many as 100 engagements a year, and has coordinated the Wayne County Civil War Roundtable programs since 2011. He is a retired school teacher who earned his bachelor’s degree from the Ohio State University and a master’s from the University of Akron. He and his wife Marilyn (a Mary Lincoln presenter) live in Wooster.
