Guest speakers Bill Cramer, Mike Lytle and Ron Spiga, members of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Historical Society, presented a program called, “Rails Along Chippewa Creek – The B&O at Sterling, Ohio” on July 9, 2023 at the Historical Society.
The history of the B&O Railroad at Sterling, the businesses that developed alongside the railroad, and the growing industrial centers served by the passing trains were discussed along with the stories told about this busy route. The junction at Sterling was so busy that in 1909, a new state-of-the-art, electrically-operated interlocking plant was installed and placed in operation. It controlled 57 signals, 14 switches, 17 derails and 5 movable-point crossing frogs!
Visitors also enjoyed a tour through the exhibit, “The Historical Roots of Sterling, Ohio”.
