The Wayne County Civil War Roundtable will present a two-part program on Union Medal of Honor recipient Frederick Phisterer on Tuesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wayne County Historical Society, 546 E. Bowman St., in Wooster. The free program will be held in the schoolhouse on the historical society’s campus. Parking is available in the historical society’s lot off Spink St., as well as along the fence at the eastern end of the Drug Mart lot on Bowman St.
Medina County treasurer John Burke will portray First Lieutenant Frederick Phisterer, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor at the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 31, 1862, near Murfreesboro, Tenn., while serving with the 18th U.S. Infantry. Under heavy fire, Phisterer, a Medina County resident, conveyed information to the commander of a battalion of U.S. Regulars, which saved the unit from capture or annihilation.
In the first part of the program, Phisterer will speak about his experience at the Battle of Stones River. In the second part, Burke will step out of character to provide more information about the battle and answer questions.
Burke has been a local historian for many years. He is a lifelong resident of Medina County and can trace his ancestry back to the first pioneers in Valley City. His relatives include veterans of the Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War II.
